Festival goers enjoy the Big Tent last year

Scotland’s largest eco festival gets underway this weekend, celebrating the best Scotland has to offer in the fight against climate change.

The Big Tent, based in idyllic surroundings on the Falkland estate in Fife, features a wide range of music from foot-stomping folk fusions and indie pop rock to world and classical talent on two stages. Headliners include Michael Marra and Attic Lights.

Also present will be the Fife Diet, a band of food activists who will be offering advice and recipes using local, seasonal and organic products. There will be woodcraft, a climate zone celebrating the best projects in Scotland to tackle climate change, and a number of guest speakers, including author Robin McAlpine and Director of WWF Scotland, Richard Dixon.

The Big Tent has been running for four years and has been voted among the top 10 UK Folk Festivals and Green Festivals, and named one of Britain’s best family days out. The organisers, Falkland Centre for Stewardship, believe that the festival, surrounded by more than 1,000 acres of woodland, is the perfect setting for the annual gathering of Scotland’s environmentally aware.

A spokesperson said: “We are interested in celebrating what communities can achieve together, in inspiring the visitor and in creating a laid-back vibe for their festival that is friendly and simply loads of fun.”

The Falklands Centre for Stewardship aims to encourage people to move toward sustainable living. As well as the Big Tent festival, the Centre owns an organic farm and creates new walkways and bridges for walkers and cyclists. It is currently working with the local community on plans for allotments and wood fuel production.

The Big Tent takes place in Falkland, Fife, on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July 2009.
