Statoil launches competition to inspire innovation in energy

A competition managed by The Economist Intelligence Unit designed to generate ideas and build awareness of innovative solutions to the world’s energy challenges, launches today.

The energy industry is an integral part of the solution for securing energy supply and tackling climate change. As a reliable supplier of natural gas, Statoil is enabling the transition from carbon-intensive coal to a lower carbon future. It has applied the offshore capabilities it has developed over 40 years operating in the North Sea to create more competitive technology in the wind sector. The company invests in research and development to help increase the efficient use of resources in oil and gas production and it continues to pioneer carbon capture and storage at its Sleipner and Snøhvit fields at the Norwegian continental shelf.

Statoil is proud of its innovative roots but it is open to finding the seeds of new ideas from all kinds of sources. Through this competition the company wants to encourage people to share their good ideas and to create awareness and debate around the energy challenges we are all facing.

The competition looks to stimulate discussion and generate entries, focused on three core categories:

1. Skills for innovation – examining how critical well-trained engineers, technicians and scientists are to the energy sector;

2. Diversifying our energy mix – tackling the joint challenges of a booming population and depleting energy resources;

3. Ensuring access to energy in developing countries – focusing on how we can ensure access to energy for the 1.5 billion people that have no access to electricity today.

“Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. So today we are launching this competition with the Economist Intelligence Unit to inspire students and industry professionals alike to take an innovative approach to achieving a sustainable and secure energy future,” says Hege Marie Norheim, senior vice president of corporate sustainability at Statoil.

Students, graduates, business executives and energy experts are invited to contribute their ideas and views on these issues in the form of a written essay, video or infographic by 17:00 GMT on 23 December 2013. Entries will then be reviewed by a high-level panel of judges who specialise in each category, including Mark Kenber (CEO of The Climate Group); Christoph Frei (Secretary General of the World Energy Council), and Jose Goldemberg (former Brazilian Secretary of State for Science and Technology). Format specifications can be found on the contest website www.energyrealitiescompetition.org.

The competition will culminate in a 90-minute live-streamed webinar on 25 March 2014 facilitated by The Economist Intelligence Unit. This webinar will bring together four energy experts and the competition winner to debate how these challenges should be approached.

One lucky winner will receive:

* A place on the live-streamed webinar concluding the competition;

* A trip to Statoil’s 2014 autumn conference in Oslo, Norway;

* An advertorial feature in a digital edition of The Economist about the winning entry;

* An annual print and digital subscription to The Economist

In addition two runners-up will be awarded a trip to Statoil’s 2014 autumn conference and an annual print and digital subscription to The Economist. Statoil’s autumn conference is an annual event where the IEA’s World Energy Outlook is presented, and key global energy issues are discussed by energy specialists.
