A climate camp for youths across the world ends today in Denmark.

500 youths gathered on 8th August in Søderborg to come up with ideas to protect future generations against the effects of climate change during the Bright Green Youth Climate Camp.

Representatives from areas where the effects of climate change are already being felt, such as Greenland, Nepal, Australia and India are included in the 41 countries represented. They have been sharing their stories about drought, flooding, rising temperatures and melting glaciers.

During the four days, the 14-16 year-olds have come up with ideas that could solve some of the climate challenges facing the world today. For example, the youths devised a speed bump that would drive a turbine when a car drives over it, providing enough energy to power a light-bulb for nine hours.

The ideas will be presented to the Danish Government ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen later this year.

Peter Rathje of ProjectZero, one of the three organisers behind Bright Green Youth, said: “Tomorrow’s adults look at the world from totally different angles when it comes to the problem of climate change. They have no climate prejudices, and consequently, they are more innovative.

“At the same time, the youths were born to be global citizens, providing them with the basis for seeing the climate debate and the climate solutions in a totally different light.”

The youths are staying with host families in Søderborg during the conference and are sending regular updates of the camp via social networking sites Twitter and MySpace.

ProjectZero have worked with Danfoss Universe educational park and ActionAid Denmark on the youth counterpart to the UN conference.
