Edinburgh-based Scottish hydropower company Water Engine Technologies have become Scotland’s first recipient of a €20,000 Climate KIC award following their presentation at Cleantech Innovate Scotland in Glasgow this week.

Cleantech Innovate Scotland was opened by Fergus Ewing MSP, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism who spoke about the importance of innovation which is “at the heart of the vision for Scotland”, the importance of consistency in Government “or investors will put their money elsewhere” and his hopes for a planned, business-like approach for future dialogues around energy policy.

Water Engine Technologies (WET) were one of 25 companies competing for the Climate KIC cash prize which is awarded to companies judged to have a low-carbon innovation capable of commercial scalable growth and which will have an impact on global climate change.

WET Director Euan Hogg, said: Receiving the Cleantech Innovate award is fantastic news and a great confidence boost to the Water Engine Technologies team. The prize will allow us to design, construction and commission our first full size Water Engine in the Scottish Borders.

“With this unit in the ground we will be in a position to expand our operations in the UK with an eye on the international market.”

Robert Hokin, CEO of ecoConnect CIC, organisers of the Cleantech Innovate programme of low carbon showcases said: “Water Engine Technologies Ltd is the ideal recipient of this award – it is a young company with vision and great potential.

“We look forward to watching them grow.”

Impact Solutions and GreenSpaceLive – Heriot Watt Energy Academy Prize.
