David Kennedy, chief executive of the Government’s independent carbon watchdog the Committee on Climate Change, has announced his resignation to take on a new role.

He will be handing over to Adrian Gault as interim Chief Executive until a permanent appointment is made to replace him.

As Chief Executive of the Committee since it was set up in 2008, David has been pivotal in establishing the CCC as an independent, effective and trusted adviser on climate change.

Under his leadership, the CCC has successfully influenced mitigation and adaptation policy in the UK, including the legislation of ambitious carbon budgets and fundamental reform of energy policy.

David Kennedy said: “I have greatly enjoyed and benefitted from working with a wide network of experts during my time at the CCC, including in government, industry, NGOs, think tanks and academia, all of whom have been instrumental in developing our advice.

“The relationships we have are strong and I hope they will continue. As we embark on the development of the Fifth Carbon Budget and the Climate Change Risk Assessment, stakeholder input will continue to be invaluable in helping us to develop robust advice based on evidence and analysis.”

And in a video statement, he added: “I’ve been at the CCC for seven years now and when I walked through the door there was no one here, I just had a blank piece of paper. As a team, we have worked very hard to build what I think is an effective organisation

“The thing I’m most proud of is the impact that we’ve had. We are a high-impact organisation and we have changed the way people here and in other countries think about energy and climate change policies.

“It has been a good place to work and I leave with a great deal of sadness, but it has been seven years and it is time for me to move on to a new challenge and let someone else have the opportunity to lead this great organisation.”

Recruitment consultants, Saxton Bampfylde are leading on recruiting a new Chief Executive for the CCC.
