David Kennedy under fire for Washington breakfast trip

The government's Carbon Tsar has been criticised after it was revealed he has jetted off on a 7,500 mile round-trip to attend a breakfast meeting in America.

David Kennedy, who is Gordon Brown's leading advisor on climate change, flew out on Monday for the three-day stay in Washington DC.

The chief executive of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) is scheduled to attend the breakfast meeting with Senator John Kerry

During his stay, he will be ferried around Capitol Hill in a gas-guzzling Sedan limo. The Taxpayers' Alliance say it is wrong for the trip and he should save cash and carbon by picking up the phone.

A spokeswoman said: “It is inappropriate on several levels for Mr Kennedy to embark on this trip.

“Firstly, at a time when many taxpayers are struggling to make ends meet in the recession it is lavid and inappropriate to jet across the Atlantic to attend a breakfast meeting.

“Secondly, Mr Kennedy's organisation spends a lot of time telling ordinary people to cut back on their air miles and he flies a total of 7,500 for breakfast in Washington - it is a hypocritical stunt.”

A spokeswoman for the CCC said Kennedy was making the trip to speak with US politicians to persuade them of the need for change to counter the effects of climate change.

She said: There aren't any confirmed meetings but we are hopeful Mr Kennedy will have the opportunity to attend briefings and meet several members of Congress.”
