Energy firms in battle of the league tables

The UK's two leading renewable electricty suppliers are battling it out in Sunday Times league tables of their own.

Chippenham-based Good Energy was rated one of the best green companies in Britain after it was ranked 56th in the Sunday Times Green List 2009 published last weekend.

Last month, Ecotricity founder Dale Vince appeared on the Sunday Times Rich List 2009 in joint 657th place with an estimated fortune worth £85 million.

According to the paper's wealth research team Ecotricity was valued in excess of £100 million but despite its impressive performance did not feature in the subsequent Green List 2009.

Good Energy was rated 56th and was placed third in the UK in a survey of workplace opinion, which makes up 30% of the overall ranking.

Juliet Davenport, Chief Executive of Good Energy, said: “We’re delighted to be on the Green List for the second year running. Reducing carbon emissions and encouraging people to lead low carbon lifestyles is at the heart of our business.

“All the team at Good Energy uphold these principles and work hard to ensure that environmental commitment is at the core of how our business operates.”

Richard Caseby, Managing Editor of The Sunday Times, said: “There may be plenty of environmental awards but this is the first that has both a robust methodology to measure environmental performance and a survey of each company’s staff to find out whether the green sheen is more than skin-deep.”

The Sunday Times Green List is widely regarded as a definitive guide to businesses with the most radically improved environmental performances. The survey takes account of the views of employees - who get to rate their organisation’s green credentials - as well as assessing the environmental performance, policies and practices of businesses.

The Sunday Times worked with environmental consultants, Bureau Veritas and market research group, Munro Global, to devise a robust and meticulous methodology for the competition.
