"We are on the front foot with carbon management," says CCC chief Kennedy

The Government's independent advisory group on climate change has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after taking action on climate change by measuring, managing and reducing its carbon emissions by over 8% over the period from May 2009–May 2011.

The Carbon Trust Standard recognises organisations for real carbon reduction. Based on a rigorous, independent assessment, it certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions across their own operations, and are committed to reducing them year on year.

The Committee on Climate Change achieved the 8% reduction by cutting its carbon footprint for its business emissions from 53.5tCO2e in 2009-10 to 49.1 tCO2e in 2010-11.

This was achieved by encouraging behaviour change amongst staff to reduce the amount of electricity used in the office, and by introducing a travel policy to reduce the overall amount of travel, promote and monitor the use of sustainable transport.

The Committee has offset its business emissions over the two years from 2009-2011 using Carbon Retirement offsets, which is covered by the UK Government’s Quality Assurance Scheme for Carbon Offsetting, and which ensures best practice.

The Committee has also put in place a series of measures to ensure that the footprint of the analytical reports that it produces is reduced. This has included considering sustainability in all procurement decisions made throughout the organisation, printing limited numbers of reports, the use of a zero waste to landfill waterless printing process, and 100% recycled uncoated paper and vegetable inks.

David Kennedy, Chief Executive of the Committee said: “Cutting carbon is a priority for us and we are committed to achieving ambitious reductions by integrating sustainability into all business decisions”.

“We’re delighted to have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard. It is a great way of showing that we are on the front foot when it comes to carbon management”.

Harry Morrison, General Manager, the Carbon Trust Standard, said: “We congratulate the Committee on Climate Change on its achievement. Earning the Carbon Trust Standard requires strong commitment to making real change and is well within the reach of those with desire to be part of a lower-carbon world.”
