Religions "should not stay silent" on environment

A Hindu leader has called on all the world’s religious leaders to unite and develop a global partnership to tackle climate change.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed said religions “should not stay silent” on the ecological crisis, he says, is threatening the planet.

And as he urged all religions and denominations to come together and openly bless environmental causes, he claimed Hindus want affluent countries of the world to do more for the environment.

Zed said that richer nations should lead the way and show responsibility by cutting greenhouse gases and atmospheric ozone concentrations and tackling global warming.

The president of the Universal Society of Hinduism argued that world’s poor were most vulnerable to the environmental problems resulting from climate change and said the senseless uses of natural resources as well as extravagance and greed were some of the major causes of this ecological crisis.

Zed further said that religions should also come forward to do their share of tackling global warming and persuading others on this issue.

He added: “We as leaders of various religions of the world should fulfill our obligations by voicing the environmental issues.

“Religions should not stay silent spectators to threatening ecological crisis faced by humanity.”

And he urged all world religious leaders, religions and denominations to openly bless environmental causes and develop a global partnership on this subject.

Zed pointed out that ancient Hindu scriptures, especially Atharva-Veda, were highly respectful of mother nature.
