New BMW Sedan reduces its impact on the environment

The new luxurious BMW Sedan is not only a tribute to modern technology on wheels, but it is also conscious of its environmental footprint as well.

It was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September that the BMW's "kidney grille" on the front of the car actually serves an environmental purpose: Depending on the engine temperature, the chrome bars within the grill can open and close to improve the car's aerodynamics while lowering the car's fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid amazingly reduces fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent versus the same car running on a combustion engine only, signalling a shift in attitudes amongst major car manufacturers. It would appear the political stick and carrot played by the EU and intergovernmental environmental protection agency is starting to take effect amongst major manufacturers. Alongside recent measures taken to curtail the beauty and personal care industry’s wasteful packaging and such, it was a good week for environmentalists.

At the core of every BMW hybrid vehicle is the battery. It has to deal with full load peaks, irregular loading cycles and mechanical wear and tear without losing any of its capacity as well as offering high energy density. New, lithium-ion batteries are integrated in the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid, which far exceed the performance of conventional battery units. The batteries are connected to the electric motor and other components via the 120V, on-board network. This enables the ongoing use of the air conditioning system even when the Auto Start Stop function has switched off the petrol engine.

The BMW V8 petrol engine with High Precision Injection and Twin Turbo is the most efficient engine in its class delivering unrivalled fuel consumption and emission levels. This superior engine is now combined with an electric motor fully integrated in the transmission housing, developing maximum output of 15 kW/20 hp and peak torque of 210 Nm.

If you can’t afford a brand new BMW there’s always something you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s always a good idea to make sure you have an environmentally friendly exhaust in your car, regardless of the model - UK drivers can check theirs here. If we all come together and take logical steps to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as keeping pressure on big companies like BMW to curb their emissions, then the future will begin to look brighter for us all.
